Field Visit Report (World Wetlands Day Celebration, 2021)

As a part of World Wetlands Day celebration, 2021, Bhoomitra, biodiversity club of our college decided to conduct a field visit to nearby wetland, with an objective to identify the biodiversity, water quality, status of aquatic ecosystem and the threats faced by. On 21st February, 2021, I visited Kayamkulam Lake, as my home is located approximately 10km near the lake
The days are celebrated to remember about the things that we forget due to our busy life. It’s not only about remembering, but also to take a step forward for the good deed. Through this field visit I could understand that what it is meant by that. Two years before, when I visited the lake, the construction of the park was on and also I could clearly see mangroves. But this visit really made it feel like there is no time needed for extinction and destruction. The park is full of plastic and other wastes and it feels like it was build way before, may be 10 years!. There is no proof of mangrove existence. For sure these changes are only due to human interventions and improper management. Wetlands degradation and destruction is occurring more rapidly than in any other ecosystem. Evolving a correct conservation strategy and a sound management plan is essential in addition to protecting the existing water bodies, and reclaiming and restoring wetlands.
